2019 will be a significant turning point in the world of advertising. According to eMarketer’s latest forecast, digital ad spending in the U.S. will exceed traditional ad spending for the first time.

The combination of digital advertising becoming more personalized and relevant and consumers spending more time online than ever before, digital advertising offers a powerful way to reach these multi-device, multi-channel consumers.

By 2023, digital will exceed the two-thirds mark of total media spending.

U.S. digital ad spending is expected to reach $129.34 billion in 2019, accounting for 54.2% of total media ad spending, according to the eMarketer report. Digital advertising’s new dominance is due to increased investments in digital video combined with the decline in TV ad spending.

So, which industries are contributing most to digital advertising’s accelerated growth? A recent report from eMarketer breaks out spending by industry, indicating that ‘retail’ and ‘automotive’ spend the most by far on digital ads.

Here are the most recent figures of digital ad spending industry by industry in the U.S.

The U.S. retail industry will dominate the digital ad business this year. Retailers will spend $28.33 billion on digital ads. 

The auto industry will remain the second-highest digital ad spender in the U.S. Auto advertisers will spend $15.91 billion on digital ads in 2019. The automotive industry -- which consists of dealers, local dealer associations, and manufacturers -- remains one of the highest-spending categories in digital advertising. 

 

At ZypMedia, we saw the automotive industry dominate digital ad spend with 18.29% and the retail industry ranking second with 16.56% in the first half of 2019.
